"Yunni? What are you doing?! You shouldn't be here!"
14-year-old Kim Yunni looked back to see her good friend, Heo Soomi, jogging up to her. At the moment, Yunni was jogging on the sports ground track...
"Well, I'm getting ready for Sports Day."
"Kim Yunni, you're not getting ready for anything except my deathbed." Yunni cracked a grin.
"Mianhae, Soomi unnie."
Soomi sighed as she jogged alongside her friend. "How are you feeling?" She asked finally. Her friend grinned again. "I'm fine, unnie." "SOOMI! YUNNI! GET YOUR BUTTS HERE, NOW!" The two girls tried not to laugh as they heard Key call out to them. Key was Soomi's 2-year-long boyfriend- he was like an oppa to Yunni. He whistled as they ran off the track and up to him. "TaeMin's gonna get a kick out of this if he knew what you were doing." "That's why you don't tell him, oppa. Besides, I'm fine. My heart is fine. Ok?" TaeMin was Yunni's best friend...although she had something for him. She just won't admit it.
"Too late." A voice broke through their conversation. Yunni quietly cursed under her breath as she heard Soomi sigh and Key snicker.
"Kim Yunni, what exactly are you doing here?"
"Just a little exercise. Getting ready for Sports Day."
"You're not getting ready for anything if I'm here."
"What's wrong with wanting to do well?"
"Nothing. But..."
There was a reason why Yunni's friends were so concerned about her running. Since she was young, she had been diagnosed with heart disease- meaning that no matter how much she loved running and doing sports, she can't overexert herself. Of course, TaeMin, Soomi, and Key was always on the lookout for her, but it gets annoying sometimes.
'Especially when I want to do something,' Yunni thought afterwards as she sipped her drink, her friends next to her. This year's Sports Day was extremely important to her- it was the day which she would prove herself. She felt her heart growing steadily stronger, and with her being in the background for so long, she was ready to prove to the world that she could do it. Result? She had secretly signed up for the 400-meter run.
"Yunni? Yunni!" Soomi roughly shook Yunni by her shoulders.
"Oh, mianhae. I was-"
"Spacing out, I know. Keep it up, you'll be better than me at it in no time. Anyway, just asking if you're gonna go home right now, because Key and I-"
"-have fun."
"Stop cutting me off!" Yunni grinned as TaeMin spoke up.
"I'll take her home." Soomi and Key smiled, giving them last hugs and 'bye's before walking off, the two of them holding hands. TaeMin and Yunni watched their backs until they disappeared, then turning around and walking to Yunni's house. Yunni held her breath- she knew it was coming. And, 5...4...3...2...1..."What did you think you're doing?" TaeMin's voice was unusually quiet. His best friend gulped, fighting to even out her voice when she answered him. "I told you. I need to get ready for Sports Day." TaeMin stopped and turned to look at her. His usually warm, brown eyes were now filled with anger. "Why the hell would you sign up for the 400-meter run without telling me?!" Yunni flinched.
"You would have stopped me if I told you."
"But it's worse for me to find out by myself!" Yunni was starting to get annoyed.
"TaeMin, I'm fine! Quit being so overprotective!" She instantly regretted saying those words when she saw her best friend's eyes widen before he took a deep breath. Hesitantly, she lifted her hand to his cheek. "I'm sorry." Yunni whispered. Instead of giving a response, TaeMin pulled her into a hug, his arms tight around her. Yunni's arms wrapped around TaeMin's torso, burying her face into his chest. "I'm protective because I care, because I love you, best friend."
Yunni closed her eyes and wished the moment would last forever, even with the words 'best friend' at the end.

The next run. Next run. Yunni squeezed her eyes shut when she heard her name announced. "Good luck!" Soomi said, running to her and giving her a tight hug. "Thanks, Soomi." Key cracked a grin, giving her a hug as well. She could see the worry behind the fake smile..."Fighting, dongsaeng." Nodding, Yunni looked at TaeMin, who was finishing the shot put event. "Well, I guess I'll see you in a couple of minutes." She smiled at her friends, stepping onto the track. Adrenaline pumped through her, her heart thumping madly. She took a deep breath. 'You can do it, girl. Last run.' She encouraged herself. All of a sudden, her stomach was in knots and she was on the verge of getting sick. "Racers ready!" The head timer called out. A couple of seconds later, the loud horn sounded, marking the start of the race. Yunni's legs pumped up and down at an even, steady pace.
"So far so good." Key muttered to his girlfriend, who was Yunni's timer. She nodded in reply.
Hard. Go hard. Yunni's lungs burned as she got to the final hundred meters. Her chest felt as if it was on fire; she struggled to get the oxygen into her lungs. Almost there. Don't give up. Her heart screamed in pain in the midst of the fiery inferno that engulfed it. The finish line was in sight...holding on to the last shred of sanity, Yunni ran forward with a burst of speed, crossing the line seconds before she collapsed on her knees onto the grassy field next to the track, hand clutching her heart.
"YUNNI!" Soomi ran to her friend, Key right beside her. Her left arm came around her dongsaeng's back, resting on her upper arm, supporting her. "Dongsaeng, don't scare me." Key said to her, desperation in his voice. Soomi's eyes widened in fear. "TAEMIN!" She called out, terror evident in her tone. "TAEMIN!" Her eyes searched wildly for her friend, resting on the person in blue sprinting over to the group of three- he skidded onto his knees, grabbing Yunni from Soomi and Key's arms, cradling her against his chest.
"'Ni, 'Ni..." TaeMin choked out. Yunni's heart was thumping rapidly; he could feel it. Her panting never ceased, even as she forced her eyes open to look at him. "Yunni, you're going to be fine." He held her closer to him. She opened her mouth, trying to say something. He bent his head lower, trying to catch what she was saying. His heart shattered into a million pieces as he heard her once-energetic voice reduced to only a hoarse whisper. "Tae...TaeMin...you're my...majimak...sonmuel..." TaeMin's heart bled as her words reached him. The warm blood rushed through him; he could feel the burning liquid in his eyes, down his cheeks. "Yunni..." Her name left his throat in a whisper. Slowly, he could feel her breath, her heart slowing; he felt the life leaving her. His heart bled even more.
"No, Yunni, stay..." He pleaded. Yunni's warm, tear-filled brown eyes looked at him with love one last time before they closed. "YUNNI!" Her name was ripped from the inside of him, his soul hollowed to the very core. His arms tightened, rocking them back and forth. The tears exploded out of his eyes; a void filled his heart.
Soomi was wrapped tightly in Key's arms, sobs wracking her body. Key's tears dripped down, one by one onto the grass.
TaeMin had never felt so alone.
-Flashback end-
"Hey, 'Ni." The rain dripped off of his hair onto the grass below. 17-year-old Lee TaeMin paused, lifting his head up to look at the falling rain before resting his eyes on the gravestone in front of him. "I miss you."
